5. Compute your gate's width using the formulas below
shown separately for single and double door gates.

(SINGLE DOOR GATES)
In
Wood Frame Doorway, or if Replacing an Existing Door.
Order a gate
3/4" less wide than the wood frame
opening. No wall planks are needed. Make sure your door
frame has at least a 2" wide flat area, to which to
hinge.
If replacing an existing door, order a gate at least 1/2" less
wide than your existing door, which gives room for surface-mount
hinges, and room to swing.
Between
Wall and Post/Newel
Order a gate
1 1/2"
less wide than the post-to-wall opening.
Measure above any baseboard on the wall. This gives
you 3/4" for one plank
on the wall, plus 3/4"
margin for your gate to swing.
You can hinge to the wall plank, and latch to the post.
Or, if your post has flat areas on it, you can hinge to
the post, and latch to the plank.
If baseboard is present, it must be 3/4" or less in
thickness, otherwise work with us to customize your
order.
Between
Two Walls in Room or Passageway
Order a gate 2 1/4" less wide
than the passageway
opening (measure ABOVE any baseboards). This gives you 1
1/2" for two planks, plus an extra 3/4 of margin
for your gate to swing. You will anchor the planks on
your wall, and hinge to one, and latch to the other. The
wall planks will let your gate swing clear of the
baseboard, if present.
If you have baseboards which are any thicker than 3/4"
of an inch, please contact us. We're used to dealing
with historic homes and large moldings!
Between
Two Posts
Order a gate
3/4" less wide than the
post to post opening. No wall planks are needed.
Make sure your posts have at least a 2" wide flat area,
to which to hinge. And, you need to be able to
attach an upped and lower hinge which are vertically
aligned.
Pick your Pet or Child Gate's Configuration
(DOUBLE DOOR GATES)
Compute the width of your gate, as if it were a
single gate, above.
Subtract 1/4" from this
number, and divide the result by 2. This is the
width of each door.
Example: You need a two door gate in a passageway
measuring 52 3/4". You know you will need two wall
planks. If you were ordering a single door gate, the
width of that door will be 52 3/4" - 2 1/4", or 50 1/2".
Subtracting 1/4" and dividing by two, means each door
will be 25 1/8" in width.
